GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE LEGALIZATION OF DOCUMENTS

 In order for foreign documents to be recognized in Brazil, they must first be legalized – i.e. authenticated - at a Brazilian Consulate.

The Consulate-General of Brazil in Atlanta will only recognize documents issued in our jurisdiction (Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Mississippi).

the legalization of documents is processed by MAIL ONLY.
Go to the post office and buy two stamped, self addressed Express Mail envelopes. One will contain the document(s) for legalization and the other is the return envelope. Please make sure to safeguard the tracking numbers for your records.
Send the documentation to the Consulate-General of Brazil at 3500 Lenox Road N.E, suite 800, Atlanta, GA, 30326
Processing time is 20 (twenty) business days or more during high season. There is no expediting fee.
Everything that is submitted by mail will be returned by mail. It is not allowed to pick up and/or submit documents to be legalized at the reception desk of the Consulate.  

 

Authentication of Signatures:
Step-by-Step:
1) Prepare document (i.e. private power of attorney, travel authorization for minors, etc.)
2) Sign document in the presence of a notary public:
            2.1. Applicants must utilize any notary public in our jurisdiction;
            2.2. Notary Public must clearly indicate with his/her seal the county where he/she is registered. The notary public’s seal must be stamped directly on the document.
3) Obtain a certificate from the county clerk:
3.1. Every notary public is registered with the county government. Applicants must go to the county clerk’s office of the county where the document was notarized and request a certificate stating/proving the notary is, in fact, registered.
4) Go to the US Postal Service and buy a US Postal Money Order(company checks, personal checks and other money orders will NOT be accepted) for $20.00 (twenty dollars) per document. If you prefer, you may pay the fees in cash.

Authenticated Copy:
In order to make an authenticated copy of a document, applicants must send the original document along with a simple copy to be legalized.  
Step-by-Step:
1) Gather documents and copies;
2) Go to the US Postal Service and buy a US Postal Money Order(Company checks, personal checks and other money orders will NOT be accepted) for:
- $5.00 (five dollars) per Brazilian document

$10.00 (ten dollars) per American document

Please note that one document may contain several pages; in which case only one money order will suffice (i.e. copy of passport). If you prefer, you may pay the fees in cash.
