Temporary Visa - Vitem I

Please read carefully the General Information page before applying for any type of visa. That page contains important information that is commum to all types of visa.

Eligibility

This type of visa can be issued to persons who wish to travel to Brazil for cultural, study or training purposes, such as:
  • Researchers, professors or members of cultural, technological or scientific missions, as long as services rendered are not paid by a corporation or any other entity based in Brazil;
     
  • Technicians, service providers, volunteers, specialists, scientists and researchers under the umbrella of an international cooperation program;
     
  • Technicians traveling to Brazil in order to receive training in the operation/maintenance of machinery or equipment made in Brazil;
     
  • Providing services, including volunteer work, to charitable or religious entities, without a work contract or employment relationship with a corporation or entity based in Brazil;
  • Interns and other unpaid trainees;
     
  • Amateur athletes under 21 years of age, taking part in unpaid training programs in Brazil;
     
  • Exchange students;

Temporary Visa (Vitem I) holders are not allowed to engage in any paid activity in Brazil.

Required Documents

  1. A Passport, valid for at least 6 (six) months and containing at least 2 (two) blank visa pages.
     
  2. Two recent individual passport size photograph (2x2 inches), in color or black and white, front view, full face, taken against a light background.
     
  3. Two Visa Application Forms (.pdf), duly filled-out (items 1 through 27) and signed, in the original; the Consulate will not accept forms sent by Fax.
     
  4. Proof of residence within the consular jurisdiction for the past 12 months.
     
  5. Proof of financial ability to pay for the stay in Brazil or letter from sponsor assuming responsibility for applicant's trip and stay in the country.
     
  6. Certificate of good conduct/ lack of criminal record issued by the police department/ authorities of applicant`s place of residence.
     
  7. For applicants under the age of 18 not traveling with both parents or legal guardian(s), a notarized letter of consent signed by parents or legal guardian(s) authorizing the applicant to travel to Brazil.
  8. Applicants listed above, traveling to Brazil to provide services,  including volunteer work, to charitable or religious entities, without a work contract or employment relationship with the Brazilian-based entity/corporation, must submit the following additional documents:

    a
    A letter of invitation from the Brazilian entity inviting applicant to perform volunteer work in the country.
    b
    A letter from the entity specifying the place and condition of the volunteer work to be performed by the applicant.
    c
    A letter from the Brazilian entity assuming responsibility for all maintenance expenses associated with applicant`s stay in Brazil as well as his repatriation to his/her country of origin upon the termination of his work/mission in Brazil
    d
    Copy of a health insurance policy, valid in Brazil, on behalf of applicant.
    e
    An official document from sponsoring entity in Brazil (such as statute, founding charter, etc.) as well as proof of the entity’s registration with the competent regulatory body (Conselho de Assistência Social Nacional, Estadual, do Distrito Federal ou Municipal).
    f
    Proof that the inviting entity in Brazil is in business and functioning.
Additional requirements apply in the following cases

For applicants planning to engage in research, scientific or teaching activities:
Letter from Brazilian sponsoring organization informing activities to be pursued, length of stay and pecuniary conditions. Medical or dental volunteer services can only be provided once the proper authorization by a Conselho Federal or Regional de Medicina is issued. The collection of biological and mineral material and/or carrying-out activities in indigenous areas require prior authorization by the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq and/or by the Fundação Nacional do Índio- FUNAI;

For applicants planning to engage in activities under an international cooperation program:
Copy of the international agreement, proof of professional expertise and letter from sponsoring organization informing activities to be pursued by the applicant and attesting to the following: that the organization will be responsible for repatriating the applicant (and his/her family, as the case may be) once the visa expires or the agreement ceases to exist, and that the applicant will not receive any payment from a Brazilian-based entity;

For applicants traveling as interns:
Copy of appropriate documentation attesting to the conditions for internship, scholarship and the required involvement of a Brazilian Government agency, international cooperation organization or authorized exchange organization ( in this case, include copy of its bylaws, official registration and CNPJ number (Cadastro Nacional de Pessoas Jurídicas); the Visa will be good for up to 1 year, non-renewable.

For exchange students:
Copy of school registration or letter of acceptance, parents` authorization (if applicant is under 18 years old), address/names/qualifications of responsible parties in Brazil;

For applicants traveling to obtain technical training:
Letter from employer certifying that applicant will not receive wages or payment of any kind from a Brazilian entity, and letter from the Brazilian company describing the nature of training to be provided and assuming responsibility for the applicant`s stay in Brazil; The Visa will be valid for up to 60 days, renewable once for the same amount of time;

For applicants traveling to obtain athletic training:
If applicant is under 18 years old, parent`s letter of authorization; recent non-criminal record issued by local Police Department (for applicants older than 18 years old), copy of birth certificate, copy of the agreement/contract between the American and the Brazilian organizations involved and copy of documents stating the following: confirmation of applicant`s training program for a specified time period, maintenance conditions in Brazil and guarantee that applicant will be repatriated upon expiration of allowed stay in the country; for applicants up to 21 years of age, the Visa will be valid for a maximum of 1 year, non-renewable.

Fees
  • The fee for a Temporary Visa (Vitem I) is US $60.00 (US Postal Money Order only) for all citizens.
     
  • United States citizens will be charged an additional non-refundable processing fee of US $100.00 per visa, in reciprocity to an identical fee paid by Brazilian citizens who apply for a visa to the United States.
     
  • A non-refundable handling fee of US $10.00 per visa applies to visa applications submitted by mail or by any other person other than the applicant or an immediate family member.
     
  • Payments are accepted only in US Postal money order (made out to "Brazilian Consulate General in Miami")
     
  • For citizens of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, all fees must be paid with American Express or Thomas Cook money orders only.
