VITEM I - RESEARCHERS, INTERNS, AMATEUR ATHLETS, TECHNICIANS, TRAINEES OR EXCHANGE STUDENTS PROGRAMS
Temporary Visas Type I (VITEM-I) are issued to foreign citizens entering Brazil as:
A. researchers, scientists or professors who come to Brazil as members of a cultural, technological or scientific mission, provided that no income is derived from a Brazilian source, (payment of daily travel allowances and scholarships excepted);
B. interns provided always that the internship is practical part of vocational or university studies;
C. amateur athletes under 21 years of age engaged in intensive sports training in Brazilian institutions without remuneration for competing;
D. technicians, service providers, volunteers, specialists, scientist, researchers who will work under an international cooperation agreement recognized by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Relations;
E. unpaid trainees in the operation or maintenance of equipment or machines made in Brazil;
F. students sponsored by an exchange institution such as Rotary or AFS.
GENERAL DOCUMENTATION REQUIREMENTS (any category above):
A. Passport valid for a minimum of six months;
B. Two recent photographs, front view, white background;
C. Application form (2 copies) duly completed and signed by the applicant or signed by parents or legal representatives if the applicant is a minor;
D. Birth certificate issued by Norwegian/Icelandic municipal authorities (international model). Legalization fee: NOK 160;
E. Letter duly notarized by a Notary Public (Cartório) in Brazil from the Brazilian institution stating the reason of the trip;
F. Proof of holding means sufficient to support himself in Brazil or letter of the institution in Brazil taking responsibility for the applicant’s maintenance and return trip to Brazil;
G. Certificate of residence (international model) issued by Norwegian/Icelandic authorities stating that the applicant has been residing in the Norway/Iceland for the past twelve months;
H. Transcript of the Police Records issued in the country of residence and origin, not more than 90 days prior to delivery to this Embassy. Please note that certificates issued in other countries than Norway and Iceland must be legalized by the Brazilian Diplomatic Representation in the country where they were issued. Legalization fee: NOK 160.
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS PER CATEGORY:
A. Researchers, scientists and professors who come to Brazil as members of a cultural, technological or scientific mission, provided that no income is derived from a Brazilian source (daily travel allowances and scholarships excepted):
· A copy of the ordinance (portaria) of the Minister of Science and Technology of Brazil as publicated in the Bulletin of Acts and Decrees of Brazil, in which it is stated:
a) Full name of the foreigner(s) involved in the activities;
b) Name of the research;
c) Name of the institution to which the foreigner is related;
d) Name of the Brazilian sponsoring institution.
Or alternatively:
· If the applicant is to work in Brazil for an international organization, such as the Inter-American Development Bank, the World Bank and the Corporación Andina de Fomento, as part of a project approved by the Brazilian government, the applicant must produce a letter from the Ministry of Science and Technology of Brazil or from the institution related to it and responsible for the project in Brazil, that is, a foundation, a state-owned company or a state university. The letter should state:
a) Full name of the foreigner involved in the activities;
b) Name of the research;
c) Name of the international organization by which the foreigner will be paid;
d) Name of the Brazilian institution for which the foreigner will work.
· If the applicant is to work in Brazil under a scholarship granted by a Brazilian governmental institution (such as CNPq, CAPES or FINEP), the applicant must produce a letter from the sponsoring institution in which it should be stated:
a) Full name of the foreigner involved in the activities;
b) Name of the research;
c) Name of the institution that grants the scholarship;
d) Name of the Brazilian institution for which the foreigner will work.
B. Interns provided always that the internship is practical part of vocational or universitystudies:
· Written confirmation of the applicant’s acceptance by the Brazilian university or company. No employment relationship between institution and intern is allowed under this visa. Interns may not receive wages from the university or company (scholarships are allowed).
· Letter duly notarized by a Notary Public (Cartório) in Brazil from a recognised student exchange organization- having its headquarters in Brazil (e.g. IAESTE do Brasil, AIESEC, FGV), or an international cooperation organisation or cooperation department of a Brazilian Ministry. This requirement does not apply, if the internship is to take place in a governmental institution.
C. Amateur athletes under 21 years of age engaged in intensive sports training in Brazilian institutions without remuneration for competing:
· Authenticated copy of the agreement signed between the alien and the Brazilian institution.
D. Technicians, service providers, volunteers, specialists, scientist, researchers who will work under an international cooperation agreement recognized by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Relations:
· Authenticated copy of the international agreement under which the applicant will work
· Proof of professional expertise in keeping with the work to be done in Brazil. Legalization fee: NOK 160 per document (Check information on Legalization of documents and of school documents)
· Letter duly notarised by a Notary Public (Cartório) in Brazil from the institution in Brazil stating activities to be undertaken by the applicant, its location and duration, and that the applicant will not receive any remuneration from a Brazilian source.
E. Trainees in the operation or maintenance of equipment or machines made in Brazil:
· Letter duly notarised by a Notary Public in Brazil from the company with headquarters in Brazil describing the activities to be undertaken by the applicant, its location and duration.
· Proof that the applicant will be remunerated by a source abroad.
F. Exchange students (RN49/00):
· Authenticated copy of the act of incorporation ("ata de constituição") of the exchange institution (Rotary, AFS, a.o.).
· Authenticated copy of certificate of registration of the exchange student institution at the Brazilian National Legal Persons Registry (CNPJ).
· Letter duly notarized by a Notary Public (Cartório) in Brazil from Brazilian exchange institution stating the purpose of the trip, duration and place of activities to be undertaken.
· Letter from receiving school in Brazil confirming the enrolment of the student and stating the duration of the studies.
· Complete name, address and qualifications of persons hosting the student in Brazil (“host family”).
G. Minors of 18 years of age: applicable to categories B, C and F above:
· Letter of consent signed by father and mother or guardian (proof of guardianship required), for applicants younger than 18 years old when travelling alone. If travelling with one parent only, letter of consent of the other, non-accompanying parent is required. Travel authorizations should be signed in the presence of a notary public. · Minors are exempt from presenting the certificate of good behaviour.
PLEASE NOTE THAT:
Visas are valid for arrival in Brazil within 90 days after they were issued.
Maximum duration of the VITEM-I visa is two years for applicants under category A and D (renewable), one year (non-renewable) under categories B, C and F and 60 days (renewable for another 60 days) under category E above.
Extensions (whenever possible) can be applied for at the Department of Federal Police, in Brazil, at least 30 days before the visa expires.
The bearer of this visa must register with the Federal Police within 30 days from date of arrival in Brazil.
IMPORTANT:DO NOT COMMIT YOURSELF TO TRAVEL PLANS UNTIL YOU KNOW WHEN YOUR VISA WILL BE ISSUED.
CONSULAR FEES:
Visa fee: NOK 480 Legalization fee: NOK 160 per document
For stays up to 90 days, free of charge for all kind of visas for nationals of Norway.
USA citizens are subject to an additional processing fee of NOK 1040, on a reciprocity basis.
British citizens are subjected to a NOK 1240 processing fee for all visas which validity extends the period of 180 days, on a reciprocity basis.
All applications not submitted by the passport holder in person are subject to a handling fee of NOK 80 in addition to any other applicable fee.
METHODS OF PAYMENT
All fees must be paid by bank transfer (account number 70320519126, DnB NOR Bank) or with debit card, if in person.
Bank transfers from abroad: IBAN NO70 7032 0519 126, SWIFT: DNBANOKKXXX. Please make sure that all taxes are included, so that the amount credited to our account corresponds exactly to the consular fee.
NOTE: The name of petitioner and the nature of the services to be rendered shall be specified in the payment sheet.
POST: For applications sent by post, please attach the consular fee payment receipt and a self-addressed pre-paid envelope (registered letters). The Embassy cannot be held responsible for lost or delayed mail.
PROCESSING TIME: Upon arrival of complete documentation at the Embassy, please allow a minimum of ten (10) working days for the issuance of the visa.
