IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ADOPTED BRAZILIAN CHILDREN
According to Brazilian law, adopted minors will always keep their Brazilian nationality and must therefore fulfill their duties as Brazilian citizens, which include:
-mandatory military enlistment for all citizens over 18 years of age (see below);
-mandatory electoral enlistment for all male Brazilian citizens over 18 years of age(see below).
Brazilian law allows for multiple nationalities. It is therefore advisable that the adopting family requests the acquisition of their own nationality for the adopted minor.
However, parents should be attentive to the fact that every Brazilian citizen notwithstanding eventual double nationality has to enter and to leave Brazil holding a valid Brazilian passport.
It is also important to mention that in order to travel to/from and within the Brazilian territory, unaccompanied minors need an authorization from both parents, or, if applicable, either from their legal guardian(s) or from a local or judicial authority. Minors travelling with only one parent are required to provide a notarized consent from the other parent.
